Interior wood needs the right treatment to preserve its look and longevity. The right product and solid preparation are key to a healthy, beautiful finish.
Never use exterior wood protection indoors
Exterior products can emit fumes/additives not suited for indoor air. Always choose products rated for interior use.
When should you treat wood?
- New, bare wood that must withstand wear and cleaning
- Aged wood with a dry, worn surface
- Areas exposed to moisture/splashes like kitchens and hallways
Product types
- Oil: Penetrates and highlights grain. Needs periodic refresh.
- Varnish: Forms a durable film (matte to gloss). Easy to clean.
- Wax: Natural look; more frequent care. Often combined with oil.
- Stain/tint: Changes color — always seal with a clear protective coat.
Preparation
- Degrease and clean. Let dry.
- Lightly sand with the grain (grit 120–180). Remove all dust.
- Repair defects with wood filler and sand flush.
Application — step by step
- Stir thoroughly. Test on a discreet area.
- Apply thin, even coats with brush/pad/cloth depending on product.
- For oils, wipe excess as directed. Allow to dry.
- De‑nib between coats for a smooth finish. Remove dust.
- Repeat 2–3 coats until desired protection and sheen are reached.
Ventilation and dry times
Ensure good ventilation during and after application. Follow product dry/cure times before heavy use.
Maintenance
Clean gently. Refresh oil/wax as needed. Avoid harsh chemicals that can dull the finish.
Conclusion
With the right products and proper prep, interior wood stays beautiful for years — while keeping a healthy indoor climate.
